At the beginning of the year, I laid out a few (vague) reading related goals, and I wanted to do a mid-year check in to see how I’m doing with these goals, and perhaps to encourage you to check in with yourself & your goals.
Also featured: a few of my top books of 2024 and their accompanying songs, a roundup of all the bookmarks I’ve collected this year, and a playlist for these sweltering months. Consider this a mid year muses, if you will.
Reading goals of this year
Non-fiction & intersectional feminism
Though I enjoyed some of these more than others, they were all worth reading, and I do feel as though I’ve discovered that reading non-fiction is actually quite fun! I didn’t read much non-fiction before this year, but I think it’s a solid goal to have to expand your reading. If you’ve got any recommendations, either in the non-fiction or intersectional feminism realm, please do let me know!
Queer books
These are not all the queer books I read this year, just the top ones, because I really outdid myself with this goal; I’ve read about 30 queer books this year so far and Storygraph tells me it’s my top category this year, which would be illuminating if I hadn’t already figured it out.
A few of my top books of this year & their accompanying songs
Valley of the Dolls by Jacqueline Susanna — Suha by Xiu Xiu
Jawbone by Monica Ojeda — Jesus and Your Living Room Floor by Sloppy Jane
Our Share of Night by Mariana Enriquez — Simulation Swam by Big Thief
The Color Purple by Alice Walker — No Stranger Am I by Norma Tanega
The Woods All Black by Lee Mandelo — Rewrite The Words Again by Jordaan Mason & Their Orchestra

I’ve inadvertently started a bookmark collection this year, here they are:
Left to right: twins bookmark from Julia Jane Martins, 2 of coins tarot card from a tattoo tarot deck that I lost, a bookmark from Porto, Portugal that my mother got me, and a film strip featuring photos of my best friend and my dog that I found from years ago.
A dog days of summer playlist, for your listening pleasure
Resources for doing some good in the world:
Find a protest near you - Canada (newsletter)
Palestine Feminist Collective Action Toolkit
That’s all for now, take care of yourself, and be sure to let me know what your top books of the year are so far and what you’re listening to this summer, I want to know!
so many of these are on my tbr!!! whats your storygraph??
Valley of the Dolls is a treasured book because I read it at like 13 when I was extremely impressionable. Love that you liked it. Also non fiction can sometimes feel tedious when reading but I am always glad I did after.
